I once heard someone say, “When inspiration hits, it hits you like a ton of bricks.”
I don’t think I’ve ever heard a statement more true.
Sometimes, I find myself stuck in the bottom of this big black hole most commonly known as “writers block.” It’s quite depressing. Here I am, full of all these thoughts and emotions, and I can’t seem to find the right way to put them into a song.
But, “when inspiration hits, it hits like a ton of bricks.” And, that it did!I sat down with my guitar this week and tried to write. At first, nothing. Then, still nothing. I stepped away for a bit. Came back to it, and… Yeah, still nothing.
I was defeated. So, I went downstairs to make dinner. While I was cooking, I began humming Put Your Records On by Corinne Bailey Rae. I love that song.
“Three little birds sat at my window, and they told me don’t worry”
And, BOOM! It hit me… Like a ton of bricks.
I ran back upstairs, grabbed my guitar, and within the hour I finished writing my new song, Sweet Melody.
I don’t really know what it was about that line that inspired me… Maybe it was just the fact that it made me feel happy.
“And, they told me don’t worry.”
Yeah, why worry? I can’t force a song out of me. I just have to let the words fall on me as they please.
Writing songs are a lot like farts, you can’t force them, or it’ll just end up like shit. Haha! Sorry, I don’t know why I just thought of that quote but, it fits.
I just finished putting new strings on my guitar, and I made the final touches to Sweet Melody. Now, I’m relaxing in front of the fire with a warm cup of tea and a happy heart.
